If you think that all the Africans barely cover their body (like with loin-cloths), you’re wrong. Despite the heat, Gambians, for example, cover most of their bodies. The traditional costume of Gambian women is very modest. It is called “grandmuba” – an ankle-long dress with long sleeves and an undergarment. A lot of people in Gambia are religious, many of them are Muslims, and so they behave themselves discreetly, and wear modest garments. Women often cover their heads, not only bodies.

By the way, Gambian men also use a garment similar to grandmuba. It is a long robe with long sleeves called “kaftan”.

Didn't know about grandmuba. I thought all Africans wear loin-cloths and wrap-around cloths as a folk dress

yeah dashiki is a good one! It's clear that modesty plays a significant role in their culture and attire. I recently converted towards modest clothes, actually i was curious to know more about the cultural and religious significance of these garments. Are there specific traditions or beliefs associated with dressing modestly in Gambia, especially among the Muslim community or others also?
