Weaving and looms in Ukraine

Weaving is one of the oldest crafts in Ukraine. In the 18th-19th century, most of the fabrics were hand woven. Wooden looms were used to weave cloth. Even today, some craftswomen weave and sell homemade fabrics made from linen or hemp.

On the photo below, you can see a woman weaving with a help of a modern loom (though, there are many vintage looms still in use in Ukraine). She’s wearing a shirt and a long skirt sewn from the woven cloth. The striped pattern is woven, not painted or embroidered. The woman is weaving a narrow belt called “krayka”; traditionally such belts were used in the western part of Ukraine.
