In Ukraine and Belarus the traditional male straw hat is called “bryl’”. It is usually handmade. Such materials as straw or reed are used. Bryl’ has wide breeds that protect the head and face from the hot summer sun (it is worn only in summer). Usually, bryl’ was a simple hat used by farmers and agriculturists. But sometimes such hats were a part of the festive costume. In this case bryl’ was embellished with embroidered ribbons, flowers and other decorative elements made from straw, colorful stripes, fresh flowers etc.

Straw hats are used in many countries on different continents. Mexico, Vietnam... not only Slavic countries.
